Barney Bubbles was never content to repeat a formula: whether he was reshaping the NME logo, running psychedelic light shows for Hawkwind, or designing record sleeves for Elvis Costello and The Damned, he treated every poster and cover as an excuse to push the visual language of his era somewhere new.
