The Hamer & Sickle artwork is up for sale
The photographic paste-up of one of Barney Bubbles’ most notable designs is among the late designer’s incredibly rare and highly collectible artworks included in the online sale currently being conducted by international auction house Bonhams.
In a typically punning move, Bubbles used a photograph of the smashed remains of a Hamer bass belonging to Nick Lowe to create the Soviet-style logo which appeared across the packaging and promotion of the singer-songwriter’s 1979 album Labour of Lust.
The logo appeared on all four sides of the Labour of Lust outer and inner sleeve, swooping around Lowe and also around his name when it appeared with the close-up b&w portrait which quoted the front cover of Iggy Pop’s 1977 album Lust For Life.
The Hamer artwork features in the Bonhams sale in a lot with an artboard design for a London bus advert for Lowe’s album.
Bonhams Rock, Pop & Film online sale is on until May 4 when the auction takes place. The Barney Bubbles lots are numbers 113-123. View the sale here.
